Der Roman ist eine literarische Gattung, und zwar die Langform der schriftlichen Erzählung. Das Wort Roman ist ein Lehnwort aus dem Französischen und bedeutet „Erzählung in Versen oder Prosa“. Es löste im 17. Jahrhundert das Wort Historie ab, das bis dahin die unter diese Gattung fallenden Werke bezeichnet hatte. Auch verstand man ab dem 17. Jahrhundert nur noch in Prosa abgefasste Schriften als „Roman“. Der Plural „Romane“ wurde erst im 18. Jahrhundert gebräuchlich.
